This 1946 Spartan Manor is a 25’ single-axle travel trailer is in perfect condition. This project included the replacement of the mahogany wood interior paneling, flooring, front windows, electrical system, and plumbing as well as the refurbishment of the cabinetry and axle components. Featuring a polished aluminum shell, the trailer is equipped with two doors with porthole windows, a roof-mounted air conditioning unit, a stainless-steel sink and countertop, a wood-paneled refrigerator, a tankless water heater, a queen-sized bed, a queen-sized sleeper sofa upholstered in vinyl, a flatscreen TV, and a multi-speaker sound system.
Founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1928, the Spartan Aircraft Company forayed into the production of trailers in the mid-1940s under the leadership of oil magnate J. Paul Getty. Featuring Art Deco styling by J.R. Schutes, the Manor model was manufactured utilizing the same semi-monocoque construction techniques used to build Spartan’s Executive 7W luxury airplane. The Manor Model 25 debuted with a length of approximately 25’ and a width of 8’ in 1946, which was the lone year that saw the use of mahogany interior paneling.
Exterior work during the refurbishment included the replacement of areas of the aluminum skin as well as the installation of custom-molded replacement front windows. Replacement swing-out step plates were installed under each door during the project, which is said to have been performed by Eden Valley Garage. The exterior is said to have been polished three years ago, and various scuffs and scratches are noted on the aluminum surfaces. Doors with porthole windows are positioned at the front right and left rear of the trailer and were fitted under current ownership with replacement locking flip-out door handles with adjacent winged cover plates installed over previous mounting holes.
Red-painted wheels wearing bright trim rings and hubcaps are said to have been installed during the refurbishment along with replacement tires. The axle is also said to have been refreshed during the project. The trailer tongue is equipped with a manual jack.
The interior refurbishment is said to have been based on factory floorplans, with work including the installation of replacement mahogany wall and ceiling panels and the installation of Marmoleum flooring. A period pull-out sleeper couch was added under current ownership along with period-style window dressings, and a custom mattress topper for the couch is included in the sale. Various marks are noted in the couch’s beige vinyl upholstery, as is a repaired tear concealed under a fur throw that is included in the sale along with pillows, a rug, a coffee table, wall art, and a pistol-shaped key rack. The galley area also hosts a wall-mounted flatscreen television and touchscreen controls for a multi-speaker CD and Bluetooth sound system.
The mahogany cabinetry was refreshed during the refurbishment, and a stainless-steel countertop and sink were fitted. Features include a roof-mounted air conditioning unit, dual skylight vents, a Magic Chef refrigerator with a wood-paneled door, and 110-volt receptacles, while kitchen items that accompany the trailer include a toaster over, a hotdog toaster, electric and standard kettles, a hot plate, a period ice crusher, and period aluminum jars.
The rear of the trailer can be isolated from the forward compartment by a swinging door and houses a bed of approximately queen-size dimensions topped with a foam mattress.
Identification number 2546-1086 is stamped on a tag affixed to the inside of the right-side door jamb and is also listed on the California title, which describes the trailer as a 1948 Spartan. A plate carrying the name of Glenn’s Trailer Sales is secured to the exterior panel ahead of the front door.
A hardback book featuring color photos from the refurbishment process is included in the sale, as is a copy of the 10th anniversary edition of Vintage Camper Trailers featuring the trailer.
